   Sony has finally brought 3D capability to its popular Bravia XBR series of HDTV sets. With the new Sony XBR-LX900 3D, they just might have created the ultimate HDTV (until next year, of course!). This set features a 3D transmitter, integrated Wi-Fi, and all the other tech you would expect in a high-end Bravia.

   The first HDTV in the XBR-LX900 series, which should be available by the summer of 2010, is an enormous 60-inch set. This model has full 1080p resolution for ultimate sharpness, an Edge LED backlight for optimal contrast, integrated Wi-Fi for flexibility in viewing content, and a 240 Hz frame rate to enable perfect smoothness and for the 3D functionality.

   Let’s take a closer look at that 240Hz specification. You may remember from science class that a Hertz (abbreviated ‘Hz’) represents one cycle per second- of anything. When we’re talking about an HDTV picture, Hz refers to the number of images that can be shown on the screen every second.

   Four years ago, almost every HDTV operated with a frame rate of 60Hz, or 60 frames per second. This was good, and gave a nice smooth picture for most viewing. But, some content is filmed at a different rate, and so would make the image seem to jump or stutter when fast action is displayed. Thus, 120Hz HDTVs were created to fix this.

   Now that we are entering the age of 3D HDTV sets, we need to boost the frame rate again. This is because the new 3D technology works by sending images alternately to one eye and then the other (through the special shutter glasses) so that each eye sees a slightly different picture sequence. However, this means that each eye will have to skip every other frame and see half as many images per second. Doubling the rate to 240Hz solves this problem while retaining the smoothness of a 120Hz picture.
